Dear Colleague:

We are pleased to announce that we are soliciting nominations for the 2010 A.G. HUNTSMAN AWARD for Excellence in Marine Sciences.

The Huntsman Award was established in 1980 to honour individuals of any nationality who have had, and continue to have, a major influence on the development of marine science.  It is named in honour of Dr. Archibald Gowanlock Huntsman (1883–1973), an eminent Canadian oceanographer.  Since 1981, the A.G. Huntsman Award has been presented annually in one of three categories:

§         Marine Geoscience

§         Physical/Chemical Oceanography, or

§         Biological Oceanography and Fisheries Science

The award for 2010 will be in the field of Biological Oceanography and Fisheries Science, which should be interpreted broadly to include the study of all marine trophic levels (e.g. from plankton to whales), as well as their interactions with human activities.

Nominees must meet the basic criteria of outstanding scholarship and excellence of contributions to marine science.  Nominees should be actively involved in research programs and currently providing major leadership in their field.  They must have demonstrated a significant influence on the development of marine scientific thought and should be anticipated to continue having influence in the years to come.  Thus, the

A.G. Huntsman Award targets marine scientists near the midpoint of their careers and whose reputation and outstanding contributions place them in the forefront of their field.  As a guideline, we are seeking nominees whose postdoctoral research career to date has been of order of 15–30 years.  The A.G. Huntsman Award is not intended to be for lifetime achievements.

The A.G. Huntsman Foundation, bestowers of the award, recognizes the importance of interdisciplinary work in marine science.  Therefore, nominations are encouraged where the nominee’s primary contribution is in the field of Biological Oceanography and Fisheries Science and exceptional contributions have been made across two or more marine science disciplines or at the interface between oceans and other natural systems.

Please consider preparing a nomination for a colleague in Biological Oceanography and Fisheries Science who you feel meets the criteria.  The nomination template is attached.  Upon completion, the nomination form is expected to be of order of 2 to 5 pages.  If you do submit a nomination, please be sure to include a full curriculum vitae and publication list for the nominee.  Supporting letters or abbreviated nominations from one to three colleagues are desirable and can be provided as part of the nomination, or this information can be submitted separately.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is April 16, 2010.  Nominations may be submitted by mail, fax or e-mail to me (see below).  An electronic copy of this letter and the nomination form can be found on the Huntsman website at:

www.HuntsmanAward.org

Thank you in advance for your support in ensuring that all qualified candidates will be considered for this prestigious international oceanographic award.  I look forward to receiving your nomination(s).

Yours truly,
